Giza — Pyramids eternal, Sphinx enigmatic, timeless tombs

Great Pyramid of Khufu Pyramid

Largest and only standing Wonder of the Ancient World, a staggering monument to pharaonic engineering.

Best time: Oct–Mar — Winter temperatures make standing in the desert sun tolerable for extended exploration.

Things to do:

Great Sphinx Monument

Colossal limestone statue with human face and lion body, guardian of the Giza plateau for millennia.

Best time: Oct–Mar — Cool season allows comfortable viewing and photography without extreme heat exposure.

Things to do:

Pyramid of Khafre Pyramid

Second-largest pyramid retaining original limestone casing stones at its apex, majestically preserved.

Best time: Oct–Mar — Cooler months enable longer visits to examine construction techniques and architectural details.

Things to do:

Grand Egyptian Museum Museum

Vast museum near the plateau displaying Tutankhamun's treasures and thousands of pharaonic artifacts.

Best time: Oct–Mar — Pleasant weather suits pairing an unhurried museum visit with the nearby pyramids in one day.

Things to do:

Solar Boat Museum Archaeological Museum

Reconstructed 4,500-year-old cedar vessel used for pharaonic afterlife journeys.

Best time: Nov–Mar — Cool winters protect ancient wood; visitors escape Cairo's intense summer heat.

Things to do:

From the notebook

I'd braced for the pyramids to feel smaller than expected, the way famous things often do, but standing at the base of Khufu's tomb did the opposite. A camel handler named Mahmoud negotiated with theatrical outrage over a five-minute ride, then quietly pointed out where the desert met the edge of the city like a seam.
