Planning a route through Asia

Asia rewards regional thinking over one grand route. Southeast Asia is the classic overland cluster: Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar connect by land crossings and short regional flights in one loop. Central Asia's republics, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, follow old Silk Road paths, increasingly linked by rail and shared-taxi routes. South Asia clusters around India, with Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka each reachable as a side trip. The Gulf states, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, function as a single flight-hub cluster. East Asia is largely a flying region given the distances separating China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, while the Caucasus, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, forms a compact overland loop bridging the two continents.

Monsoon timing dominates Asia's seasonal logic. Southeast and South Asia split into a wet season from roughly late spring through early autumn and a drier window the rest of the year, with exact months shifting across the monsoon's path. The Gulf states are most comfortable in winter, when summer heat makes travel harder. Central Asia runs on a continental pattern, short shoulders bracketing a hot summer and cold winter, while East Asia's four seasons make spring and autumn the easiest windows for multi-country routes.
