Planning a route through Europe

Europe's density makes it the continent best suited to rail-based routing. A core cluster, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and their neighbors, connects by frequent train lines linking capitals within hours of each other. The Mediterranean rim strings Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Croatia along a coastal arc often mixed with ferries between peninsulas and islands. The Nordic countries, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland, cluster loosely but need flights or long ferry crossings between the mainland and the North Atlantic outliers. The Balkans form a compact overland loop of their own, while the microstates, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Liechtenstein, work best as day trips grafted onto a larger neighboring itinerary rather than as standalone stops.

Europe's north-south spread means a single season rarely suits the whole continent. The Mediterranean countries are warmest and driest in summer, just as the Nordic countries enjoy a brief window of long daylight before winter brings short days and snow. Shoulder months, spring and early autumn, tend to work best for routes mixing both zones, avoiding summer crowds south and the darkest stretch north. Mountain regions add a second layer, with a winter snow season and a separate summer hiking season.
