Australia and New Zealand form the region's anchor pair, linked by frequent flights and often treated as a single extended leg. Everything else scatters across enormous ocean distances, so Pacific itineraries are built around a handful of hub airports rather than any overland logic. Fiji functions as the classic gateway to the Polynesian and Melanesian islands nearby, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Samoa, and Tonga to the east, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and New Caledonia to the west. The Micronesian cluster, Palau, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, and Kiribati, sits farther north and is usually threaded together through island-hopping flights rather than joined to the southern Pacific in one trip.

The South Pacific's cyclone season runs roughly from late in the year into early the next, making the drier middle months the more settled stretch for island-hopping across Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, and their neighbors. Australia and New Zealand run on the same Southern Hemisphere calendar, summer from December through February, though New Zealand's south and Australia's interior swing to far greater extremes than the tropical islands. Nearer the equator, Micronesian islands stay warm year-round, so their seasons read as wet or dry rather than hot or cold.
