Milan — Fashion, finance and Gothic grandeur

Milan Cathedral (Duomo) Cathedral

Colossal Gothic cathedral of pink marble spires, with walkable rooftop terraces.

Best time: Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct — Mild weather makes the rooftop terraces comfortable and crowds lighter.

Things to do:

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Shopping arcade

Ornate 19th-century glass-roofed arcade of cafés and luxury boutiques.

Best time: Year-round — A covered landmark that's elegant and inviting in any weather.

Things to do:

The Last Supper Religious site

Leonardo da Vinci's mural at Santa Maria delle Grazie, seen by timed entry.

Best time: Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct — Shoulder seasons make scarce timed tickets a little easier to secure.

Things to do:

Sforza Castle Castle

Renaissance fortress housing museums and opening onto leafy Sempione Park.

Best time: Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct — Pleasant weather suits the courtyards, museums and adjoining park.

Things to do:

Pinacoteca di Brera Museum

Venetian and Lombard paintings from 13th to 20th centuries.

Best time: Year-round — Major art museum showcasing Italian painting traditions.

Things to do:

From the notebook

Standing before The Last Supper, I had exactly fifteen timed minutes and spent half of them just watching how the guide's flashlight beam made Christ's face shift under different angles of light. Outside afterward, the Duomo's spires looked almost modest by comparison, which felt like the wrong reaction to have.
